Dr Tareq has established the Yamaguchi University-MJIIT International Joint Intellectual Property Laboratory (IJIPL) in November 2016 and headed the lab until December 2021. He led the Innovation Management research group in UTM until November 2020. He was the Head of the Management of Technology (MOT) department of Malaysia Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) until May 2018.

Dr Tareq is working as a Senior Lecturer at UTM since 2013. Before joining UTM, he taught at Independent University Bangladesh (IUB), BRAC University and American International University, Bangladesh (AIUB).

He was a visiting faculty member of University of Development Alternative (UoDA) in Bangladesh. He is a Finance major, and used to teach different courses at the undergraduate and master levels. He did his internships at Siemens (Bangladesh) and in ScanCement BD.

Dr Tareq completed MPhil in Real Estate Finance from Cambridge University, UK in 2005. He obtained his PhD in Finance from Shiga University, Japan in 2013. His MBA (Finance) and BBA (Finance and Banking) were from Dhaka University, Bangladesh. He is an ex-cadet of the 11th batch of Barishal Cadet College.

Dr Tareq has graduated 8 PhD, 4 MPhil and 9 Master (Dissertation) students. He is a Doctoral thesis examiner for The University of Notre Dame Australia and Murdoc University, Australia. Dr Tareq’s major research interests include, but not limited to, Innovation & Technology Management, Patent mapping, Finance (Asset-Pricing, Shareholder Privileges, and Valuation) Real Estate Finance, Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) and Socio-economic development. Besides, he is planning to offer consultancy for financial planning, project development, cost-benefit as well as project sustainability analysis and the development of SMEs.

Dr Tareq loves sports and other cocurricular activities. He was an active sportsman during his student life. He was the fastest man in Barishal Cadet College back in 1989-1994. He used to play for the college football and volleyball team and participated in Inter Cadet College Sports and Athletics Meet during 1992-1994. He was the goalkeeper for Finance Department Football team and became runner-up in the Dhaka University Inter Department Football Competition in 2001. He was also the House Prefect and Junior House Prefect in 1993 and in 1992, respectively.

Dr Tareq is Married to Dr Tania Islam, and they have 2 daughters Zara Afrin Ali and Zenubia Islam.
